A great farewell weekend
Posted by: SamanthaS at 7:01PM EST on July 6, 2010
So this coming weekend I leave Siouxland for Texas -- I'm moving back home to be closer to family and friends. But before I go, I got to enjoy one heck of a great (and free!) concert last weekend. Saturday in the Park was great. It was my first SITP and one to remember. I got there early to cover the first half for the Journal and I enjoyed the second half standing on a blanket near the stage, surrounded by 30,000 or so other live music lovers. I got to interview Michael Franti and Amanda Shaw, who were both really cool.

Here are some photos from the festival day:

If you got to enjoy Saturday in the Park, what was your favorite memory?

Seems kinda silly to me
Posted by: SamanthaS at 5:34PM EST on July 1, 2010

Ran across an article online today about this fashion designer who has created a line of "designer diapers" for Pampers. The designer, Cynthia Rowley, has come up with 11 styles for both boys and girls that will be sold in Target stores and on their website. Some of the offerings for girls will include ruffles and madras. For the boys - a back diaper pocket.

Is it just me, or does that seems like a dumb idea? Rowley is quoted as saying, "As a mom, I wanted other moms and dads to have more options in every part of their lives -- even diapers." I understand options are important when it comes to sizes, materials and prices - but we are talking about DIAPERS here. The kid poops in them and then they are disposed of in the trash. Plus, aren't you supposed to dress your kid in clothes, thus covering up the diaper?

Also, I imagine these disposable designer diapers will be more expensive than plain white ones. To that, I say what a waste of money! Here's a thought - the extra money you would spend on these fancy Pampers, put in a college fund for your little tike.

Maybe I'm being too practical, but I just think this is a silly use of resources. There are better ways to spend your extra money - that's assuming you have extra cash. Kids (I'm told) are expensive!

What other silly products for sale have you run across lately? Share them in the comments section below.

Samantha's big road trip
Posted by: SamanthaS at 3:43PM EST on June 28, 2010
On Sunday, I did something I've never done before - drove cross-country by myself. And by cross-country, I mean I drove from Texas to Iowa, by way of Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska (FIVE states total!). Never have I seriously thought about attempting that - I doze just traveling from Sioux City to the airport in Omaha. But flying wasn't an option this time, so I set out at 7:45 a.m. Sunday, ready to tackle the challenge ahead of me.

Fast-forward 12.5 hours, to 8:15 p.m. I arrive in Sioux City. In one piece. Still awake and alert too! I did it! So I feel pretty accomplished. You might laugh, but this was a big deal for me. If I can do that (while staying awake and arriving alive), I can do anything!

I fueled up for the big trip in several ways. The following items are things I couldn't have survived without:

The obvious - gasoline:

The necessary iced latte with two shots of espresso:

And I wouldn't travel without the all too important tunes:

What items can you not live without on a road trip? Leave your answer in the comments section below.

Side Note: Along the way, I had to stop and gas up a few times. In Topeka, I fueled up at a BP. I didn't even think about the gas station company I chose until I got back in the car. Frustrated with myself, I tweeted out that I wished I hadn't financially supported the company responsible for the massive, destructive oil spill currently plaguing the Gulf coast. Later, a couple folks tweeted back, explaining that by boycotting BP, in most cases you are hurting the individual station owners the most, not the BP company. Read here for more. I didn't know that. Glad my fellow tweeps set me straight.

Bike SUX this Saturday!
Posted by: SamanthaS at 12:28PM EST on June 17, 2010
Bike SUX is this Saturday - are you in? While I won't be riding the 21-mile loop, I will be volunteering at the event, directing traffic. Here's a map of the route, which takes riders to Dakota City and back to Sioux City's northside. Should be a good time, and it helps a good cause too - benefiting Goodfellows charity. Hope to see you out there!

Stephen Colbert sticks it to the English
Posted by: SamanthaS at 3:11PM EST on June 15, 2010
While I wholeheartedly love America, Great Britain has a special place in my heart. I studied in London one summer in college and fell in love with the culture there. So it breaks my heart this disastrous oil spill damaging our coastline is the responsibility of a British company. However, I think Stephen Colbert summed it all up last night on his show quite well.

If only the oil spill was a coffee spill...

The funny folks at UCB Comedy created the following video, making fun of the way the BP execs have (unsuccessfully) handled the Gulf oil spill cleanup effort.

Battling the gnats
Posted by: SamanthaS at 6:27PM EST on June 9, 2010

So the gnats have been extra nasty this year, swarming my face anytime I'm outside. As a native Texan, I'm used to fighting the flies and mosquitoes, but not gnats. (I don't like 'em - they are "gnat" for me...haha) So how do I keep them away? Do you know of a homemade remedy or tried-and-true spray for keeping these pests off my trail? Share your suggestions below; I'd really appreciate it.
Stuff my dad says
Posted by: SamanthaS at 12:01PM EST on June 9, 2010

To honor dads this Father's Day, the Journal is going to run a piece called "Stuff My Dad Says." But we need your help. Has your dad ever said something quirky, funny or wise that stuck with you? Or did he have a certain phrase he would always say when you were growing up? If so, e-mail the phrase or piece of advice he said to reporter Earl Horlyk at EHorlyk@siouxcityjournal.com. You may just see your dad's own words in the Journal on Father's Day!

Gettin' my Greek on
Posted by: SamanthaS at 2:21PM EST on June 7, 2010
So how was your weekend? Do anything fun?

Some friends and I hit up Greek Fest, hosted by Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Sioux City. What an event! Plenty of visitors, food, drinks, dancing and music. The weather was nice too - windy, but warm. I enjoyed my very first gyro - delicious! Here are some festival photos I snapped on my cellphone:

Later, my friends and I popped into the sanctuary. Very pretty!

Changing up the routine
Posted by: SamanthaS at 11:24AM EST on June 4, 2010
I love discovering new places to eat in Sioux City. Many times, they aren't brand-new restaurants, just ones I haven't dined at before. Yesterday, my friends and I lunched at Natalia's Bakery at 20th and Court St. (I found out about the place when I read a blog post by the Siouxland Chamber.) It's somewhat of a little hole in the wall, but with a huge selection of items in their bakery. The food was good, the prices were cheap and the chips and salsa were amazing. Here's a couple photos from my visit:

It's always nice to try something new so you don't get stuck in a rut. Have you found any new places to eat in Sioux City, or around Siouxland for that matter, that you recommend? If so, share your suggestions below.
