Battling the gnats
Posted by: SamanthaS on June 9, 2010 at 6:27PM EST

So the gnats have been extra nasty this year, swarming my face anytime I'm outside. As a native Texan, I'm used to fighting the flies and mosquitoes, but not gnats. (I don't like 'em - they are "gnat" for me...haha) So how do I keep them away? Do you know of a homemade remedy or tried-and-true spray for keeping these pests off my trail? Share your suggestions below; I'd really appreciate it.

Absorbine Jr. It's actually an aches/pains medicine, but works for gnats (unfortunately, it keeps humans away too, as it doesn't smell too pleasant).

Apparently the word got out around Siouxland, because all the Wal-Marts, Walgreens, and Dollar Generals were out of them for a while.

Now you should be able to find it again at any of those stores...

Vanilla. It works.

@Steve: Deet doesn't work on these gnats... at least it didn't for me.

Vanilla works, but you have to reapply it OFTEN. Like I said, best thing I found was the Absorbine.

I have used Absorbine Jr for years (possibly 10 to 15) and it works great. I have always recommended it to others. It also works for mosquitoes and other bugs. The only down side is the smell, but sometimes you just have to put up with the negatives when the positives are that good. I'm surprised it has taken so long for word to get around.
